How to Download from Fileservers on IRC
This guide has been written to help those of you who don't know how to download from fileservers on IRC. It assumes that you have basic knowledge of computers and using IRC.
*Note : This orginal FAQ has been updated to go along with the new changes in #darkangelsvcd.
- NOTE : The serving channel (#darkangelsvcd) has now been turned into a moderated channel. This means simply that only ops (names with @) and voices ( names with a + ) can officially "talk". If a normal user tries to talk in the server channel, they will get a error saying they need a voice. All chatting (such as asking questions) must be done in our chatroom (#darkangelchat). If you are trying to get into one of the servers, and get the error about needing a voice, that means you are doing something wrong. Just pop into the chat channel and ask one of the people there. All steps that are listed below do not require you to have a voice.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN SETTING UP A SERVER, PLEASE CONTACT TARKEN.
PLEASE NOTE THAT !list NO LONGER WORKS!!!!!! You now have to sit in the channel and wait for the server adverts to come to you. We apologize for any inconveince this may cause, but it needed to be done to improve the experience for all of us.
We are currently evaluating the effectiveness of this new system. If we find that this is too troublesome, we may go back to leaving the room unmoderated.
A special thanks to uN|QuE for making the original FAQ. I just had to make a few changes to make this one work. Please contact me in the chat channel (#darkangelchat) in you have any probs. (Plowserv)

. Fserve : An abbreviation for FileServer, this is something that automates the sending of files via IRC (Internet Relay Chat) Trigger : This is the word or phrase that "triggers" the fileserver into action. Most fileservers tend to prefix these triggers with an !. Eg: /ctcp hankoll !Download Sends : The amount of current files being sent out at a time. Some servers only allow one send at a time, while others allow 10+, this is totally dependant on the connection speed of the person operating the fserve. Queues
: These normally operate on a FIFO (First In, First
Out) basis, and are used when all the send slots are used up. |
* ALL SERVERS ARE ON TIMERS!! YOU JUST HAVE TO SIT IN THE CHANNEL AND SEE WHAT POPS UP.
. <uN|QuE>(File Servers Online) Triggers:(/ctcp uN|QuE !Tutorial) Snagged:(6.2GB in 11 files) Record CPS:(150Kb/s by Test-User) Online:(1/4) Sends:(2/2) Queues:(2/10) Accessed:(25 times) Note:(This is just a tutorial) «~{Polaris IRC 2001}~» <uN|QuE> : The nickname of the person operating the Fserve. Triggers : This is what you need to type to get onto their Fserve Snagged : The amount of data that has been successfully downloaded from the Fserve. Record CPS : This is the record speed that anyone has downloaded a file from the Fserve. Online : The amount of people currently browsing the Fserve. Sends : The amount of concurrent sends that the Fserve currently has. In this example all the send slots are taken and that is why it is displayed as 2/2. Queues : This shows the current amount of files in the queue, and the maximum amount allowed. Accessed : How many times the Fserve has been accessed.
Note
: This is normally where the person
running the Fserve will have any comments, etc Whats new, and special
restrictions. |
. In order to use a fileserver successfully you may need to customize one or two settings in your IRC client. The example used here is mIRC. Goto DCC > Options
You will get a screen like : -
You need to make sure that your options match those above. If you are not going to be by your computer while you are downloading then I recommend putting on "Auto-get file", else you can select the "Show get dialog" and you will have to manually accept every file that is sent to you. Please note though, by having on Auto-get you can leave yourself open for people to send viruses etc. so use carefully Below is how the next screen should be setup.
In this screen now you can setup default folders where certain file types will automatically will be downloaded too. IMPORTANT: There is an option here where you can specify mIRC to automatically ignore certain file types. It is highly recommended that you make use of this. Common file types to ignore are *.exe, *.com, *.bat, *.dll, *.ini, *.vbs. You can add this to the "Ignore file types" section.
You can either click Add to add a new section, or Edit to edit an existing one. Below is an example of where movie files with different extensions are downloaded too.

. Now you have setup your client for downloading, its time to go get some files!! The next thing that you need to do is find a fserve that you want to access. Please note that all the servers are on timers. Currently there is no way to get a list of fserves. You just have to sit in the channel and wait. Once you have picked a server, type their trigger into the channel.
SO, lets connect to a Fserve. Lets say that this ad is one of the ones that shows up when you are waiting in the channel. <uN|QuE>(File Servers Online) Triggers:(/ctcp uN|QuE !Tutorial) Snagged:(6.2GB in 11 files) Record CPS:(150Kb/s by Test-User) Online:(1/4) Sends:(2/2) Queues:(2/10) Accessed:(25 times) Note:(This is just a tutorial) «~{Polaris IRC 2001}~» to get onto this Fserve, just type the trigger. In this case its "/ctcp uN|QuE !Tutorial" Once connected to the Fserve its self you will see a screen similar to this.
DCC Chat session You are now ready to get that file you need. The first thing you need to do is get a listing of the files being served. To do this type DIR
As a general rule if there is a size at the end of it - it is a file. If there is no size then its a folder.. easy. To change between folders type: cd <foldername> example: cd MP3 This will take you one level higher. You can repeat this process until you find the file you want in the relevant folder. To go back a directory type: cd.. To get a file off a server (this is the part you all been waiting for...) type: get <filename> example: get test1.mpg There are other commands that can be used, but these dependant on what script the fserve is using. The most commonly of these used are:
